Calan more for_patientsBy Steven D. Helgerson, State Medical Officer, Montana On March 15, 2007 the Alliance for a Healthy Montana and several related health organizations sponsored "Health Action Day" at the State Capitol building. This day provided an opportunity to reflect on dramatic changes that occurred during the 20th century as a result of remarkable work accomplished by our public health predecessors. Recalling these accomplishments provides an inspiration for current public health workers. Not only do we need to maintain and strengthen prevention strategies that made a dramatic difference in the 20th century, but we need also to demonstrate new strategies to address the major public health challenges of this century. In this article, I will illustrate some of the public health accomplishments that have occurred, and highlight some of the major prevention opportunities that require our immediate attention. Because "public health works!" we must apply ourselves to the challenges of our time. Table 1: Examples of changes related to public health actions! Fed to evaluate the effect of more unsaturated fatty acids in diets on milk and Cheddar cheese. Each replication consisted of a 2-wk acclimation of cows to the diet, followed by 3 wk data collection. The control C ; diet consisted mainly of rolled corn and soybean meal in the concentrate mixture Table 1 ; . Experimental diets contained ESB or SUN substituted for part of the corn, barley, and soybean meal. The amounts of ESB and SUN were intended to provide equal amounts of supplemental fat and to raise the dietary fat content to 5 to 6% basis ; . In addition, all diets contained corn silage, ground alfalfa hay, and respective concentrate mixtures in a 25: 50 ratio on a DM basis. Total mixed diets were formulated to be isonitrogeneous at 17% CP DM basis ; . Cows were housed in a free-stall barn, individually fed T M R once daily for ad libitum intake using Cakan feeding doors American Calan, Inc., Northwood, MI ; , and milked twice daily in a hemngbone parlor. All surgical procedures and animal care were approved by the University Animal Care Committee and followed procedures outlined by the Consortium 1988 ; . At 120 d before parturition, all cows were weighed average BW of 642 k g ; and individually fed endophyte-free tall fescue hay daily at 15 g until parturition by PR cows. The hay was fed in two equal amounts at 0700 and 1400 in separate Calzn feeders American Calan, Northwood, NH ; . To prevent orts and account for potential decreases in forage intake with advancing pregnancy, the quantity of hay fed during the collection period was 20% less than consumption during the previous 30 d. Calsn gates were monitored twice daily to ensure exclusive access by the appropriate cow. Hay was grown under irrigation, harvested at boot-stage, and stored uncovered in small bales approximately 30 kghale ; . Grab samples of fescue hay were obtained once weekly for analysis. Hay contained percentage of DM ; : NDF, 51.0; ADF, 30.0; CP, 12.7; and ADIN, .22. Four collection periods, each lasting 9 d, were conducted at 96, 68, 41, and 10 k 1.3 d before parturition by PR cows. On d 1 each trial a t 0630, particulate passage rate was estimated using Yb as an external marker. Each cow was dosed with 140 g D M ; Yb-labeled fescue hay 1.6 g of Yb ; via the ruminal cannula. For all periods, hay that was labeled with Y b was obtained from weekly grab samples taken during the first adaptation period. Hay was labeled with YbCl3.6H2O according to procedures of Teeter et al. 1984 ; . Rectal grab samples were taken before dosing and at 8, 12, 18, and 120 h after dosing. On d 6 0630, 100-ml ruminal fluid samples were collected from the mid-ventral area of the rumen and cows were dosed with 200 ml of Co-EDTA 724.0 mg of Co; Uden et al., 1980 ; . Mid-ventral ruminal samples were withdrawn by hand a t 1, 3, 6, and 24 h after dosing. Immediately after withdrawal, ph was measured with a combination electrode, after which the sample was strained through four layers of cheesecloth, acidified with 1 ml of 7.2 N H4 100 ml of strained fluid, and stored frozen -40C ; . Particulate matter retained on the cheesecloth was returned to the rumen after each sampling. Also on d 6 0630, 12 polyester bags 10-cm x 20-cm; pore size, 53 f 10 pm; Ankom, Spencerport, NY ; that contained approximately 3 g of ground 2mm screen ; fescue hay obtained from grab samples during the initial adaptation period and six empty bags one baghncubation time ; were suspended in the rumen for 0, 4, 8, 12, or 96 h. Upon removal, bags were washed under cold, running tap water until the rinse water was clear. Bags were then freeze-dried Virtis Freeze Drier, Virtis, Gardner, NY 1, followed by drying for 24 h at 100C in a forced-air oven and toprol.

Annwyl ffrindiau Onid yw amser yn hedfan? Ac ysywaeth, awn ninnau hefyd gydag ef! Dyna sut y teimlwn fel arfer pan ddaw'r Calan a mis Ionawr ar ein gwarthaf. Dros dro y mae e ar y ddaear ac hynny, rhaid iddo ymgeisio at ddoethineb. Meddai'r Salmydd eto: "Felly dysg ni i gyfrif ein dyddiau, inni gael calon ddoeth" Salm 90: 12 ; . Mewn geiriau eraill, dysg ni i wneud y defnydd gorau o'r amser prin sydd gennym yn y byd hwn. Cyngor yr Apostol Paul wrth Gristnogion Colosae ydoedd hyn: "Daliwch ar eich cyfle" Colosiaid 4: 5 ; . wnawn ninnau ddal ar ein cyfle a "phrynu'r amser" i ddibenion Duw eleni? Yr oedd yr Arglwydd Iesu yn gwybod yn iawn fel y gallai gormes amser a galwadau bob dydd fynnu bod yn feistri arnom. Ydych chi'n cofio ei ymateb i'r g r a ddywedodd wrtho ryw dro: "Canlynaf di, Arglwydd; ond yn gyntaf caniat imi ffarwelio 'm teulu." Luc 9: 61 ; . Meddai'r Iesu wrtho: "Nid yw'r sawl a osododd ei law ar yr aradr, ac sy'n edrych yn l, yn addas i deyrnas Dduw." Luc 9: 62 ; Ar olwg gyntaf yr oedd cais y dyn yn un cwbl naturiol. Fe fyddai wedi bod yn hynod o anghwrtais iddo fynd i ffwrdd heb ddweud wrth ei deulu ei benderfyniad. Ond y mae dilyn Iesu yn rhywbeth na ellir ei ohirio. Y mae'n fater o frys. Delwedd drawiadol yw delwedd yr aradr a ddefnyddiwyd gan Iesu yn ei ymateb i gais y dyn, a hawdd yw ei chymhwyso i'r bywyd ysbrydol. Y mae teyrnas Dduw fel darlun o gae eang yn barod i'w aredig, a'r aradr yn barod i rwygo'r pridd. Y mae fel wynebu gwlad agored sy'n llawn posibiliadau anchwiliadwy. Efallai ein bod yn tybio nad yw'r amser gennym i ddilyn Crist heddiw. Ond os yw hi'n anghyfleus heddiw, y tebyg yw y bydd hi'n anghyfleus yfory hefyd. hynny, rhaid ceisio rhoi'r flaenoriaeth i'r Iesu ac i ofynion yr Eglwys bob amser, er fod hynny'n anodd. Fel yn hanes yr amaethwr sy'n aredig ei g ys, ni ddylai dim dynnu ein sylw oddi wrth ein gwaith. Ymlaen yr 'r Cristion mewn bywyd ac y mae ganddo yntau hefyd g ys i'w haredig. Y mae'r Prifardd Mererid Hopwood yn ei cherdd "Gwaith y Nadolig" yn ein hatgoffa nad rhywbeth i'w gyfyngu i gyfnod y Nadolig yn unig ydyw gweithgarwch yr Eglwys, ond y mae i fod i barhau ar hyd y flwyddyn er hyrwyddo dyfodiad y Deyrnas. And ANG I return the concentrations of ANG IItowards normal, despite continuing inhibition of ACE 10, 15, 16 ; . Previous studies have found that different substrates react differently during CEI therapy, revealing different degrees of inhibition of plasma ACE activity 10, 11, 16 ; , but until very recently 16 ; , there has been no systematic examination of the relationship between plasma ACE activity and the ANG II: ANG I ratio during CEI therapy. In this study we compared the changes in plasma ACE activity, measured by two different in vitro methods, with the changes in ANG H: ANG I ratio that occur during CEI therapy. The changes in plasma ACE activity as measured by a spectrophotometric assay with 3- 2fiirylacryloyl ; -i-phenyla1anyl-glycyl-glycine FAPGG ; as substrate showed a close agreement with the changes in ANG ll: ANG I ratio, whereas a fluorometric assay with HHL as substrate grossly underestimated ACE inhibition. Participants and Methods: We evaluated a ; whether various aspects of executive function, measured by the WCST, COWA, Trails B, and GoNo-Go GNG ; tasks, was related to self-reported depression MMPI-2 ; in intractable epileptics, and b ; whether the relationship between different aspects of executive function and depression varied by seizure laterality. Patients were pre-surgical candidates for ATL 56 left, 61 right ; . Groups were matched for age, education, and seizure duration. Results: Depressed patients performed slightly worse on tests of executive function than non-depressed patients, and displayed significantly more errors on WCST and GNG-B. Depressed left TLE patients exhibited significantly more errors on GNG-B, and worse performance on Trails B and COWA, compared to right TLE patients with similar depressive symptoms, who had more perseverative responses and errors on the WCST. Relationships between depression scores and neuropsychological performance on non-executive measures were generally non-significant. Conclusions: Increased rates of depression and executive dysfunction tend to co-occur in patients with TLE. The type of dysfunction depended on the laterality of seizure focus, as left and right TLE patients showed impairments on separate aspects of executive function. Putative neurobiological mechanisms underlying the relationship between depression, seizure laterality, and executive dysfunction are discussed. Correspondence: Bonnie C.
